Biograd (North Dalmatia)

Biograd Biograd

The Historic town of Biograd is set amongst crystal clear waters overlooking the ´olive isle´ of Pasman, and the beautiful Kornati archipelago. If there exists one place on the Adriatic Coast that should be visited and explored because of its beauty, ideal position, harmony, warm-hearted people and being near to the most important Croatian national parks, as well as being a protected natural region, then it is, of course, Biograd na moru.

Biograd is a town in northern Dalmatia that is ideally located as a Riviera centre, and Dalmatian nautical paradise. If there exists one place on the Adriatic Coast that should be visited and explored because of its beauty, ideal position, harmony, warm-hearted people and being near to the most important Croatian national parks, as well as being a protected natural region, then it is, of course, Biograd na moru.

The Historic town of Biograd is set amongst crystal clear waters overlooking the ´olive isle´ of Pasman, and the beautiful Kornati archipelago. From the majestic Velebit Mountains to the graceful Krka waterfalls, the five national parks in this region make Biograd a unique destination. Biograd is the gateway to the Island of Pašman. The western coast is exemplary of a pristine mediterranean landscape. Visit the medieval monasteries, rural villages, vineyards and olive groves, ideal for eco-tourism. Nature hike or drive to its highest peak, Bokoj. The effort is rewarded by a stunning view of the Dinaric Alps to the east, and a myriad of tiny Kornati islands to the west. In the poetic words of George Bernard Shaw …"On the last day of the Creation, God desired to crown his work, and thus created the Kornati Islands out of tears, stars and breath …".

The Dalmatian coast, with 1000 islands to explore, is simply described as a sailing paradise. You can drop anchor where you please, fish, or take heavenly swims in the myriad of deserted & picturesque bays, far from the tourist masses. Undisturbed sea flora and fauna is the perfect invitation for scuba diving and snorkeling. There are the options for diving, sailing, jet-ski, trekking, cycling, climbing, canoe safari, rafting and paragliding near to hand. Visit the nearby islands and national parks. We recommend islands Pasman, Vrgada, Zdrelac ...., and National parks of Plitvice, Kornati, Paklenica, Krka , Nature park Vransko jezero ....

As the 9th century coronation place of the first Croatian Kings, Biograd holds claim to one of the most significant towns in Croatian history. Ravaged by the Venetians in 1125 then again by the Turks in 1646, its defensive medieval town architecture has since been well preserved. You can visit the Town museum and look at the numerous artefacts and evidence of Biograd's stormy past. Here, there is an interesting archaeological collection with prehistoric, antique and early Croatian findings, boat cargo from the 16th century, and a number of other exhibits.

The gastronomic pedigree of the Dalmatian coast is just as interesting and diverse as its history, from the simple traditional fishermen and shepard's dishes, to the oriental influence of Turkish, Venetian and later Hapsburg cuisine. While fish has always been the main feature of Dalmatian cooking, there is very wide range of culinary delights to taste and explore.
